Picking the low-hanging fruit

Shipping is one of the most efficient means of transport, but that does not mean improvement is impossible or unnecessary. Because ships are often one-offs or built in small series, there are plenty of opportunities ot improve their efficiency. While large ship owners have an energy-efficiency team to evaluate and implement enery-saving measures, this is not always the case for smaller or governmental ship owners. Often, it’s a lack of time, focus or knowledge which leaves a huge potential on the table. That’s where we come in. We evaluate the ship and its operations, talk to the crew and technical superintendents, in many cases join for a trip, and make a list of recommendations. These can be both operational measures (speed adjustments, trim optimisation, reducing turn-around time, etc) and technical measures (hydrodynamic improvements, wind propulsion, energy recovery, etc). For each measure, we evaluate the potential savings in fuel costs and emissions, the investment cost and pay-back period, the complexity of installation, and the maintenance requirements.
